Are there zebra mussels in Houghton Lake? ›

The shallow water and other characteristics that make Houghton Lake such a good habitat for native mussels unfortunately also make it well-suited to zebra mussels, said mussel researcher David Zanatta, assistant professor at Central Michigan University's Institute for Great Lakes Research.

Houghton Lake has a maximum depth of 21 feet and an average depth of less than nine feet. Thus, Houghton Lake contains extensive shallow-water areas suitable for rooted plant growth. The shoreline of Houghton Lake is over 35 miles long and the shoreline development factor is 1.8.

It is the largest inland lake in the state of Michigan, and one of the largest natural inland lakes in the United States (many man-made impoundments are much larger).

The zebra mussels also outcompete the natives for food and space, and because of their fast reproduction can quickly overwhelm a water system. The feeding habits of zebra mussels can also have a drastic impact on an infested lake. Zebra mussels are filter feeders that siphon particles of plankton from the water.

In North America, diving ducks can eat mussels. Fish species commonly found in Manitoba such as freshwater drum, lake sturgeon, channel catfish or common carp may learn to eat zebra mussels, even crayfish may also feed on them. However none of these Manitoban predators have evolved with zebra mussels.

During the summer, the warm waters of Houghton Lake are perfect for swimming, boating, water skiing and fishing. Guests also enjoy barbecues and bonfires on the beach, beach volleyball and lounging on the shoreline.

The freighter, probably a grain carrier, jettisoned its ballast water into Lake St. Clair, between Lakes Erie and Huron. Distribution. Zebra Mussels are native to the Black and Caspian seas region in southeastern Europe. Zebra Mussels entered the Great Lakes in the late 1980s through ballast water discharged from ships. Since then, they have spread through much of eastern Canada and the United States.

Zebra mussels are native to the drainage basins of the Black, Caspian and Aral Seas of Eastern Europe. It is believed that ships originating from European ports carried the mussel in freshwater ballast that was discharged into Great Lake ports.
