Making somen noodles at home couldn’t be easier! Here’s a basic somen noodle recipe to show you how to cook somen noodles in your own kitchen.

What Are Somen Noodles?

Somen noodles are Japanese noodles made from wheat flour and salt. They are thinner than udon noodles but thicker than soba noodles. They can be served cold or hot depending on how they are prepared.

Somen noodles are often served in soup broth or dipped in sauce like ponzu before eating.

What You Need to Make Somen Noodles

For the Somen Noodles

Toppings:

  • boiled eggs
  • sliced shiitake mushrooms
  • grated ginger
  • bokchoy
  • cucumbers
  • green onions
  • toasted sesame oil

How to Make Somen Noodles

  1. In a large saucepan or pot, add water and bring to a simmer.
  2. Gently unwrap the somen noodles from the paper wrapper and add slowly add them into the simmering water. Cook for 3-4 minutes (check with package instructions), stirring constantly with a chopstick.
  3. Once done, drain the noodles using a colander. Rinse the noodles under cold water.
  4. Meanwhile, make the dilute the mentsuyu sauce according to bottle instructions. It will typically be a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio of mentsuyu to water. You’ll want to
