Why You’ll Love it:

To say we love peanut butter in our house is an understatement. Half my heart is made of it.

We put it in cereal, slather it on graham crackers, eat it by the spoonful, and most importantly, throw it into smoothies! This peanut butter smoothie is a homemade version of Smoothie King’s peanut power plus.

It tastes like a decadent peanut butter shake with less guilt and bloating. You only need five basic ingredients for this peanut power plus recipe – pb, dates, milk, protein powder, banana, and ice!

It doubles as a satisfying treat AND a high protein breakfast. It emits good vibes and dreamy peanut butter.

Key Ingredients:

Peanut butter – It isn’t a peanut butter smoothie without peanut butter! If you can’t tolerate peanuts, you could try almond, cashew, or sunflower butter. I haven’t tested an alternative nut butter yet.

Vanilla protein powder – I highly recommend a protein blend. I’ve found 100% Whey protein creates too much foam. You can use a blend or a plant-based version. Mine was sweetened with Stevia. The sweetness of your smoothie will depend on the sweetness of your protein powder.

Frozen banana – For a thick, creamy shake-like consistency! You can freeze your banana whole then cut it, or you can cut it into chunks before you freeze it. Just be sure to peel it first, so you don’t have to peel it frozen! Freeze at least overnight.

Nonfat milk – For a creamy consistency. You can use any type of milk – plant-based or regular. If you don’t have milk, cold water works in a pinch.

Date – For natural sweetness. Be sure to use fresh dried dates. If your dates sit too long, they dry out and harden. Hard dates don’t blend well. If your unsure, soak the date in warm water for 5 minutes first. You can use two dates for extra sweetness.

Ice – Smoothie King uses ice to thicken their smoothies, so I find it necessary to achieve a similar texture.

How to Make Smoothie King’s Peanut Power Plus:

Smoothies are super simple to make! Just one of the many reasons I love them so much.

Here’s what you need to do:

Combine ingredients: In the pitcher of your blender, combine the peanut butter, protein powder, date, frozen banana, ice, and milk.

TIP: Start with the soft ingredients. Placing the soft ingredients closest to the blades enables them to catch the ingredients and NOT get stuck.

Blend: Start the blender on low speed, then increase to high. Blend until the mixture is creamy and smooth.

Recipe Tips:

  • Choose the right protein powder. I’ve found that 100% whey vanilla protein creates a very foamy smoothie. For a thicker texture, use plant-based or a protein blend.
  • Freeze a banana the night before. It takes two seconds! Just peel it and throw it in a bag. You can cut it into chunks first, but you don’t have to. Frozen bananas are fairly easy to cut on a nonslip cutting board with a sharp knife.
  • If needed, soak the dates. Dates harden as they sit. Hard dates don’t blend well. Soak the date for 5 minutes in warm water first if needed.

Variations:

At Smoothie King, you can order the Peanut Power Plus in chocolate or strawberry too! Try one of these simple variations:

  • Chocolate Peanut Power Plus – Swap the vanilla protein with chocolate protein. Add two teaspoons of cocoa powder.
  • Strawberry Peanut Power Plus – Omit the ice. Add 3/4 cup of frozen strawberries. If needed, add a splash more milk.
  • Dairy-free/vegan – Use a vegan plant-based protein powder and plant-based milk.
  • Gluten-free – Make sure the protein powder you use is labeled gluten-free.
  • Oats – Add 1/4 cup of rolled oats for some whole grains and oatmeal flavor.
  • Yogurt – Add a scoop of Greek yogurt for even more protein!

Storage:

I always recommend making smoothies when you intend to drink them. They only take 5 minutes to make and cleanup is a breeze. Most blender pitchers are dishwasher-safe.

If you want to make the smoothie ahead of time, pour it into a vacuum insulated cup and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. I recommend drinking it within 4 hours of making it.
