Will there be a season 2 of The Last of Us? ›

The second installment of the Max drama is slated to launch in 2025. HBO boss Casey Bloys first hinted at this timeline at the end of 2023. How many episodes will be in The Last of Us Season 2? Co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann told Deadline that Season 2 will be shorter than Season 1 with seven episodes.

The first season was filmed in Alberta from July 2021 to June 2022, while the second season was filmed in British Columbia from February to August 2024.

Ali Abbasi and Jasmila Žbanić were announced as directors in April. In July 2021, the Directors Guild of Canada (DGC) revealed Peter Hoar was assigned to direct, followed in August by Mazin, in September by Druckmann, and in January 2022 by Liza Johnson and Jeremy Webb.

Joel and Ellie are back in the first photos for the eagerly anticipated second season of HBO's The Last of Us. The photos featuring stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey were first revealed during the Warner Bros.

While Ramsey does in fact have something akin to Ellie's Part 2 hairstyle, the concern is that they still look too young for what is supposed to be a 19 year old Ellie, now much older than the 14 year old Ellie from the first game. Taller, sharper, more grizzled. Ellie is a hunter in Part 2, and often flat-out scary.

“We feel like it's almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4.”

Joel will be 4 years older in HBO's #TheLastofUs Season 2 than in the game. This age difference could allow for an even deeper exploration of the character's physical and emotional vulnerability and fragility. He'll be 61 in Season 2, compared to 57 in the game.
