1995 Miata M Edition - $4500 (Cincinnati)

http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/cto/3159416351.html

1995 Mazda Miata M Edition. 87k. I am the 3rd owner of this car, the second owned it since 1995. Always garage kept, never driven in the winter or salt. Runs, drives, and stops great. Body is rust free and very straight, having some rock chips and minor scratches. Top is very nice, no leaks, but rear window is burned and cracked. Tires are new in the last year. 3 of the wheel center caps are missing. This interior is nice, carpet is close to perfect, driver's seat has typical wear. The CD player does not work, but sound system works great, with new Kenwood speakers. Perfect car for summer fun...

I'm checking out the first one tonight.

I've contacted the seller of second one a couple times, but they are steadfast at taking $5400 (despite price drops from the original $6500+ listing price). No record of timing belt or shocks being done, but everything else sounds like it's in really good shape. Due to lack of records, I felt like it was worth $4500, but they declined that offer.

$5400 is a fair price for that car. You should be able to tell if the shocks have been done by driving the car and the timing belt can wait a few more seasons.

There's a difference between fair value and a good deal. I'm not going to buy a Miata at "fair" value, especially one without maintenance records and near the end of convertible season in Ohio. It's been listed for about a month without selling, so I think the market around here is speaking for itself.

About a month ago, a 95M sold in Columbus for $6k. It had approximately 60k miles, matching hardtop, 60k mile service completed, new convertible top, and everything else was pristine. In my opinion, that buyer got a good deal, but this car is not worth $600 less than it.

In regards to the work on this one, neither piece have been done. The shocks may not need it, but since I plan on daily driving my next Miata in any non-inclement weather, I'd rather make sure the tbelt is done when it should be than chance leaving me stranded riding home with AAA.

Three missing center caps alone are going to cost you $200 if you can find them. The second one is a better buy even at the asking price but if price is all that is important to you, then check out the first one and see what they say.

Checked out the first one. Besides what's in the ad, here's what I saw:

- Two pretty big scratches (one on 1/4 panel, other on rear bumper)
- AC needs recharged
- Valve cover gasket needs replaced
- No record of timing belt, and owner predicts it was never done
- Driver's seat wear was worse than expected
- Shift knob wear was more than expected
- Wheels all had clear coat flaking or salt erosion on the lips
- Clear coat peel on hood (less than a handful of small spots)
- Rear window was completely brown and cracked. Would definitely need replaced
- All VIN tags were in tact
- Second owner (family friend of current owner) had it for 16+ years. He's owned it for 2-3 months and wants to sell before winter.
- All power accessories worked well
- Chassis was tight, suspension felt good

Overall it seems like a great driver, but shouldn't command a higher price for being an M. It would require pretty good investment to get back to anything close to mint condition.

No 1 sounds fair but somewhat neglected - $4000 offer / $4500 tops.

No. 2 is probably not going to be a good 'deal' no matter how you try. They know its value - so buy or walk away. I've got that much in my '95 base all fixed up. I would pay the money if it proves to be as good as they say - these models are getting harder to find.

This is where the Art of the Dicker begins - taking note of the vehicle's evident deficiencies and arriving at an agreeable price thereafter. Sometimes you win, sometimes you pay - all depends on how valuable that particular car is to you.

There's a lot to say for a car that has everything working on it and still retains a good appearance - that's what brings the premium price. Stand firm for your judgment on its value and see what happens. Money still talks...

If I was in the market for 95M # 2 I'd take cash with me, offer what you think is a fair offer and see if you can't get the deal done. A lot of tire kickers on CL - cash in person can work wonders.

I'm passing on #1. I think it's a little too rough around the edges, and even though I'd love an M at that price point, I have a feeling it'll nickle and dime the next owner.

And Cincy, I tried that with #2. I told them straight up what I was willing to pay with cash in hand, but they said they had an offer at $5400 and were willing to sit on it until that fell through.

It's whatever. I found another good one that I'll check out as soon as the seller gets back to me.

If #2 doesn't sell in a few days or a week, the ball will be in your court to make another offer and force the sale. If it's worth buying...

There's plenty of fish in the sea - for now.
