Chicago Tribune from Chicago, Illinois (2024)

Section 1B Chicago Tribune, Saturday, December 22, 1973 Mass today for ex-aide at Loyola MASS FOR the Rev. Michael I. English, S.J., 66, former president of Loyola Academy, will be said at 10 a.m. today in the school chapel, 1100 Laramie Wilmette. Father English, who also was former regent of Loyola University's Stritch School of Medicine and director of the Loyola University Alumni Association, died Thursday in Resurrection Hospital.

A native Chicagoan, Father English was a graduate of St. Ignatius High School and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from St. Louis University. He was ordained a priest in the Society of Jesus on June 24, 1937. HE SERVED as president of Loyola Academy from 1959 to 1965.

Before that, he taught philosophy at John Carroll University in Cleveland and a Loyola University here. During his tenure at Loyola from 1946 to 1956, The Rev. Michael I. English he served as regent of the medical school and later as director of the Alumni Association. After retiring as president of Loyola Academy, Father English served briefly as headmaster of the school, and until his death was active in parish and retreat work.

In 1969, he was the recipient of the academy's Daniel A. Lord award for distinguished service to youth. Survivors include two brothers, John and Maurice; and two sisters, Miss Mary Ann English and Mrs. Edward Morse. $50 stock sires $4 million fortune DENVER, Dec.

21 Regan carefully saved $50 while living on Denver's west side in 1930, and she intended to spend the money on a new coat. Instead a friend persuaded her to invest in the stock market. When Miss Regan died Sept. 22 in the small brick home where she was reared, she left a fortune of more than $4 million in stocks. A loner for most of her 72 years, Miss Regan made enough profit on her $50 investment to buy a new green coat and a pair of shoes.

The quick cash return caught her fancy and she became addicted to Wall Street dealings. RICHARD M. Greene, her stockbroker and friend, said the stock portfolio she built during her life "really looked like a mutual fund -it contained lots of growth stock," the Denver Post said. Miss Regan retired about 1965 from her long-time job as a secretary for U.S. Fidelity and Guaranty Co.

here and the stocks became an even larger part of her life, along with her church work. Greene said despite his pleas and those of her attorney, Louis Isaacson, Miss Regan continued to live in her upstairs apartment in her home which she had converted to two apartments, renting out the lower floor. HER WILL left almost all of the $4 million to the Roman Catholic Church and National Jewish Hospital, the Post said. "I pleaded with her for 12 or 14 years to move into a highrise apartment-I knew she could afford it," Isaacson said. "But she wouldn't do it." Instead Miss Regan stayed in her home neighborhood and spent some of her time sitting on the balcony-porch of her apartment watching passersby.

When she was unable to attend the nearby St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, priests came to her home to give her communion. Father Aquinas Reding of the church found her dead of a heart ailment in her apartment. Her only living relatives were cousins. School board settles with injured teacher By Leanita McClain THE BOARD of Education and Blue Cross Insurance agreed yesterday to pay $13,000 in medical expenses for a disabled teacher, ending a seven-month dispute between the teacher and school board officials.

Under the terms of the agreement, Blue Cross will immediately pay for the hospital bills of Mrs. Lily Pickens, 42, a former special education teacher at King School who was assaulted by a pupil last April. Blue Cross is the insurance carrier for the school district. An attorney for the board said the Illinois Industrial Commission which rules in such cases, will decide Jan. 3 whether the board or Blue Cross was liable for payment.

The expenses may have to be shared by the two agencies, he said. MRS. PICKENS, of 1029 S. Claremont had been embroiled in a fight with the school system since one of her students, an emotionally distrubed 14-year-old girl, threw her down and banged her head against the floor. She had asked the board to pay for two major back operations she underwent following the incident.

She also contended that because the injuries occurred at work she should receive her regular pay instead of $109 a week in workmen's compensation to support herself and seven children. Pickens now wears a back brace and walks with the aid of crutches. The board had refused to pay her medical expenses until Mrs. Pickens' medical history was reviewed and it was determined whether her hospital stay was connected to the assault or past injuries. "It's about time they decided to pay," Mrs. Pickens said of the agreement, "It's only just and right.

I'm relieved." DALTON E. 14D'S thought-provoking poem, "Where Were the Other Shepherds?" suggests how easy it is to miss significant matters because we are preoccupied or insensitive. McDonald wonders "Where were the other sheperds When the angels sang that night? Were they watching their sheep Or fast asleep When God's glory shone so bright?" Were there only three Wise Men? Was there no one at Bethlehem's Inn perceptive enough to understand what was happening in a manger nearby? "Great things seldom come with convincing labels on them," R. R. St.

John wrote. We miss them unless we are perceptive, just as "the other shepherds" missed the angels' song and God's glory the first Christmas. Possibly the other shepherds were quarreling among themselves, or asleep, or preoccupied with the price of mutton. In any event, they missed the great event that turned out to be a watershed of human history. WE MISS the wonder of "sunset and evening star," the heavens declaring the glory of God, and the firmament showing His handiwork because our eyes are glued to our plodding feet.

Our anxieties and worries obscure what is right with the world while our animosities and angers make us insensitive to the moments when the morning stars sing together. Like the other shepherds, we miss the touch of God in our common days. In all probability, the shepherds who heard the proclamation of the "good news" were prepared in mind and heart for their great experience. The Passover was near at hand and they were yearning for One who would come to redeem. Israel.

Insight, understanding, and the Spirit of God come only to minds and hearts prepared by thought and prayer. a Save us, God, from occupation, anxiety, and worries ness of Thy Spirit brooding Funeral Directors JOHN CARROLL SONS "HOME FOR FUNERALS" 25E.
